the first hat I made following your instructions came out perfect then I made others following the same instructions using the same hook and they came out super small.. I don’t know what the problem is

  • tjw1963

@Applez2luv Yes a size J hook will work. You may need to adjust and work less increase stitches if you find that cap is working up to large.

  • Applez2luv

is it ok if i use a J hook? thats he only one i have

  • tjw1963

@KJFemi Even if you use a smaller crochet hook, there is going to be some trial and error in getting the correct size for a smaller head. There is not a specific answer to your question because there so many variables that could throw the size larger or smaller.

  • KJFemi

@tjw1963 I love your tutorials,I have the same question…..what size hook will be best to make this hat in the size for a 7 year old??? I still want the slouch, just a smaller size! I also want to know if you have a tutuorial for an infinity scarf using a shell stitch! Thanks again!

  • Noushabaamyoor

@tjw1963 excuse me Am noushaba from ksa if u dont mind will you pls give the different size and use ofcrochet needles. am very intrested with espesially your crochet classess

  • WANGxBEE

Actually nevermind! I found out why!

  • WANGxBEE

Im not sure about round 5 because half of 24 is 12 and 12 x 2 = 24 and 24 + 12 = 36 so wouldnt the total stitches be 36 not 35 so im afraid to go on because of this ….. But is it my mistake or yours? (not to sound rude but just a question)

    Thanks!~

  • tjw1963

@harmonylover18 It is not going to affect the outcome of the hat to much. It may be a little bit larger so towards the end,you may need to compensate by working a few extra decrease stitches at the band.

  • harmonylover18

Hi Teresa,I have used a few different patterns by you and you videos are so helpful! I had a question,I’ve been working on this hat and the number of stitches that I get in the rows are at least 10 more than you say there should be. I noticed it at about row 8 or 9,it was supposed to have 43 stitches and I came out with about 55. I’m not sure how that happened, but I was wondering will that effect how the hat comes out,do you think it will be okay?
    Thanks!

    hi Theresa,
Do you have any tutorials for an infinity scarf?? I’ve been following your tutorials and just love how easy to follow your videos are..but cannot seem to find one for an infinity scarf! :( Thanks much!

  • MsLibranz

I want to thank you,Theresa, for sharing your knowledge and easy-to-follow instructions of crocheting. I learned how to crochet a peruvian beanie and made a few for family and friends, finished a scarf for my daughter by following a pattern you demonstrated, and am now in the process of crocheting a Beret for a neighbor to match her winter coats. Thank you, again,Theresa, for sharing your knowledge using either the video or written instructions!

  • tjw1963

@mrsdreazy05 You can safely continue on with rounds to give it more depth and a slouchier look.

  • tjw1963

@mrsdreazy05 The easiest way to make a hat smaller is to use a smaller hook. That may not be enough so you will reduce the amount of increase stitches and rounds by working less of them, which will create a hat for a smaller head.

  • mrsdreazy05

hello i made my beret hat and its perrrrfect,i was alittle nervous at first thinking it would end up 2 small. thank you. how do i make a smaller 1 for like a 7 yr old? whats the process?

  • mrsdreazy05

hello i am coming along ok with this pattern, but i am afraid to go pass round 13. my hat is looking like its not long enough to decrease. and i kinda want hat to be slouchy what should l do? idk ,continue on with pattern? i am using redheart brand yarn, looks tighter,i dont wanna get towards end of hat,and than its too tight.

  • tjw1963

@majawow There are many reasons why caps turn out smaller. Some people crochet tighter than others. The yarn used may be slightly smaller and the hooks can vary in size as well. Thank you for sharing your results in solving the size issue.

  • majawow

Hi Teresa, thank you for the tutorial. I ve made two hats following it,using crochet hook 5.0 mm. The first one is somehow smaller than yours, but looks great! For the second I modified a bit pattern:round 14 i did decrease in every 10th instead of 5th,so i ended with about 55 st. and at 18th round i had about 30 st. I realized that for this pattern yarn should be very SOFT,otherwise the texture would be too firm.

  • tjw1963

@AkiraNao I just use leftover yarn tails for a marker. It does not have to be anything fancy.

  • AkiraNao

Thanks for posting this! It’s the first time I’m trying to make a hat and I find your video’s very helpfull. :)
Also it’s very smart to use a different color as a marker,I almost panicked when you talked about a marker because I don’t have them. I never thought of using a different color…I feel slightly dumb about that :P
But again thanks for making helpfull video’s ^^

  • tjw1963

@dazinndisaster That will happen if you accidentally catch the tail.

I’m A Beginner And Somehow In The Beginning My CIrcle Never Looks Like That. Am I Grabbing The Wrong Strings When I Pull.?

  • cynblah

I am using an H hook and I follow each of the steps, but around Round 4 my hats starts to curve. I’m at Round 7 and decided to stop because it is really curved. Is there a way to fix this? Am I doing something wrong maybe?? Thanks!

  • tjw1963

@azzurra810 A big kiss back to you!! Apprezzo il commento!

  • tjw1963

@lelhajj100 You are welcome! I appreciate the comment.

  • lelhajj100

very beautiful and well explained,Theresa. Thank you very much!

  • mystarmoonsun

Thank You so much! I will try.

  • tjw1963

@mystarmoonsun It was produced by Caron so maybe they have something similar. A lot of people have been interested in the colors so if you all write to them, maybe they could bring it back.

  • mystarmoonsun

    O!No!Thanks!

  • tjw1963

@mystarmoonsun The yarn has been discontinued for several years.

  • mystarmoonsun

Hi!Could U please tell me what brand the yarn is on the video? it was my favour color blue &white. It ‘s hard to find it. Which store did U buy it?I Really want to buy same one on the video. It seens so soft.Baby yarn?I could make a scarf?Tell me please.Thank You!

  • tjw1963

@AmishVomitCake Thank you for sharing your suggestions. There are many types of round rods that will work for broomstick lace.

  • AmishVomitCake

Firstly:Thank you so much for this video. Broomstick lace actually makes sense to me now!
Secondly:I didn’t have a giant knitting needle or a dowel. You know what I wound up using? We bought a corner shower shelf thing and it comes with a spare rod. It was the perfect diameter and is even tapered on one end. I just wrapped the other end with tape like you said. Also,I usually hold the hook like a knife, but holding it like a pencil gives a lot more control when putting the loops on the rod.

  • tundicske

    it is very useful tutorial.

    I’m going to try it.!!

    thx

  • angeleste

Thank you soooooo much! I am a beginner (I learned to crochet last winter watching your videos!) I saw this stitch used to make a sweater and have been SEARCHING EVERYWHERE for how to do it (i didn’t know the name of the stitch). Thank you again for sharing your skills with all of us!

  • simplysusans411

@GoldieP716 why not just use a wooden spoon?

  • simplysusans411

how about using a wooden spoon with a long handle?

  • lilithtree

Thank you for showing how you hold the large knitting needle between knees. This really helped me! I was attempting to hold everything in two hands as I saw another you-tuber do…My broomstick lace scarf is coming along very nicely now. :)

  • angelaspaz

    @pinklilwat That’s exactly why I ended up here :)
I saw this pattern for a hat and had never heard of this stich before
I found it at crochetme . com

  • angelaspaz

Thank you so much for these easy to follow instructions!! Lovely stich!

  • tjw1963

@GoldieP716 Thank you for sharing your tip. I know I am going to give it a try.

  • GoldieP716

You can get the dowel at any hardware store or even some walmarts have them

  • tjw1963

@GoldieP716 Where would someone find the dowel like she is using?

  • GoldieP716

My mother in law has been making broomstick afghans for over 20 years. It is so nice to see it coming back again. It was becoming a lost art. I can make them, but they are never as pretty as hers. BTW,a wooden dowl with a wooden knob works well, that’s what she uses and the other end rounded to a semi point. She also puts the stick under her one arm.

  • tjw1963

@lovstormyweather I would suggest that you purchase 700yards/600meters. One skein will work if it is a large skein of yarn.

  • lovstormyweather

how much yarn should I buy to make a scarf?

  • pinklilwat

Can someone make a hat using this stitch?

  • Bufurzone

OK!! Iam using a marker here and imagine I’ve put it on my knees too and my back hurts,LOL!!
